Let’s Do This! Making Your Personal Yoga Practice Happen

I reached a wonderful milestone recently. I completed the journey of publishing my first book – a compilation of 30 plus years of learning and loving yoga!

This happened to coincide with another turning point in my life. The transition away from my teaching practice and long-time students here in Sedona, Arizona. After 15 years, my husband and I have decided to make a change and a new home in Prescott – another northern Arizona community one hour away. Fortunately, my farewell synchronizes with the launch of my new book. So with a sad departure comes a happy arrival – how fitting!

After thinking on how I can make this transition easier for me and for my students, Continue reading “Let’s Do This! Making Your Personal Yoga Practice Happen”

Making a Schedule to Stay On Track

wood-3157395__340“In the beginning, you will have to make room for yoga in your daily life and give it the place it deserves. But after some time, yoga itself will pull you up by the hair and make you do it.” ~ Vanda Scaravelli

The best method I have found for making room for yoga in my life is to reserve specific days for specific tasks. In previous posts, I have remarked on how effective it has been for me to label my yoga days in order to remain faithful to the practice. Since then I have slightly altered the way I incorporate yoga into my schedule as you will see below.  Continue reading “Making a Schedule to Stay On Track”

Creating Space to Be Present at Home

Young woman exercising at home, stretching arms.

To be in this surrounding is to have permission to grow.  I find myself or at least find time for myself here – unbothered, unchallenged and uninhibited.

Whether you are practicing yoga or constructing a piece of writing, establishing a space to hone your craft is essential. The actual location you utilize is insignificant. It could be a formal studio or office, a smaller section within a certain room or even a chair or place on the floor. What is important is that your mind has clear purposeful space for the energy that you will be employing.

My typical day begins here – at my desk.

It sits in my living room with plenty of light and a nice bookshelf behind to access my resources. Normally, Chloé, my Chihuahua, is napping nearby; otherwise I pretty much have the place to myself. Continue reading “Creating Space to Be Present at Home”

Support A Steady Yoga Practice: The Art of Sitting

“Perfection in an asana is achieved when the effort to perform it becomes effortless and the infinite being within is reached”. – Yoga Sutras.

Learning to sit peacefully with the breath is founded on the postures of yoga. Yoga asana is performed so that the body is able to sit comfortably  in stillness. Pranayama or breath control is the fuel that sustains us to stay steady in our bodies and minds.

In the practice of yoga it is important to find a restful seat. Using a wall, a chair or other props to keep your spine upright is suggested if your hips or back muscles are weak or tight. Another method for learning to sit on the floor is to gradually introduce the muscles to the practice.

Here are my tips for crafting a comfortable seat: Continue reading “Support A Steady Yoga Practice: The Art of Sitting”

Establish A Steady Yoga Practice – Invite Yourself

Have you tried time and time again to set up a daily yoga practice? Or, are you a current yoga student or teacher that is looking for a weekly incentive to spark your home practice or class sessions?

Establish A Steady Yoga Practice was designed to promote a lifestyle habit that can affect every aspect of your well being. It is a journey toward fulfillment; a quest to expand the horizon of your awareness. I have researched and spent many years compiling specific aspects of yoga that can be used as pillars of health and well being for body, mind and spirit. I know this sounds kind of like an infomercial but I believe these techniques are the building blocks for a steady, habitual yoga practice. They have helped me to be a successful teacher and have provided me with a more well-rounded personal practice. Suffice to say, I think that the practice of yoga is more than following a video on YouTube. Continue reading “Establish A Steady Yoga Practice – Invite Yourself”
