How do we generate and maintain our zest for life? It comes from practicing techniques for rejuvenation, reawakening and renewal.

In Ayurveda, this is the practice of Rasayana and it includes our physical, mental and spiritual states of being. Ultimately, Rasayana helps us to achieve and maintain our passion, our enthusiasm and our appetite for life. Rasayana promotes cognitive and physical strength, immunity, enthusiasm and energetic zest for the remainder of our lives. Through Rasayana we can keep living younger longer.

And, it’s not just for old agers… it’s for anyone who may be unbalanced right now. Or for anyone who wishes to move into old age more youthfully.

The Beauty of Yoga

What has 8 limbs, is 5,000 years old and generates happiness and peace wherever it goes? Well, yoga of course! 

Yes, yoga does have eight limbs. One limb for each aspect in the yogic system. These eight different appendages are called: yamas, niyamas, asana, pranayama, pratyahara, dharana, dhyana & samadhi. 

I am going to, briefly, identify each limb one by one so that you can get a better understanding of the full system of yoga.

May the (Life) Force Be with You

Breathing is an essential aspect of yoga and ayurveda that takes into account the body as well as the mind and spirit. As we learn to deepen and slow down our breathing habits, our lung capacity extends, oxygen levels increase and all of our systems benefit. Through the breath, we take in what we need and release what no longer serves us.  But this nourishment doesn’t just exist on a physical level. The unseen energy of the breath flows into, out of and within the body and is transmitted to every molecule to align and balance us physically, mentally and spiritually.

Best Routines for a Balanced Life

Today we turn to the practical side of Ayurveda. The point at which we apply the concepts and the principles I have been presenting… to our lifestyle and daily routine. Our health journey continues with learning how we can live a life that is not only long but one that is optimal and full of vitality.

In this week’s podcast, I provide some details with a general daily schedule or dinacharya for waking, cleansing, exercising, eating and sleeping. There are so many great suggestions here for honoring yourself by incorporating specific routines for the body and mind. Once you get going, you will surely see the benefits and want to keep building your ideal regimen.

Why is a daily routine or dinacharya important?

Because everything we do has a particular energy. There is the windy, moving energy of Vata, the heated, transforming energy of Pitta and the stable, nourishing energy of Kapha. The key is to achieve a balance of all three energies in order to maintain our strength, stamina and harmony.

It’s All in Your Head

This old adage has mostly negative connotations. Maybe you’ve heard someone claim that their doctor told them that their pain is “all in their head.” Or, that you, yourself, maintain from time to time that a specific feeling you are having is just “all in your mind.” I would like to respectfully declare that, of course it’s all in your head because the mind is responsible for everything.

Are You Ready to Harness the Energy of the Sun?

Happy Solstice Day!

This is the ideal time to honor all of the light we have accumulated!

And, the perfect occasion to announce my next journey.

Over two years ago, I started this blog to stay connected with my students. My initial intention was to provide information to supplement our classes and create new challenges for building a steadier practice for myself and fellow yogis. This effort has lead to nearly 170 blog posts.

Now I am beginning a new adventure and a personal goal – to accumulate and condense all of the information I have created for this blog and turn it into a book. A book I hope students and teachers will use as a planning resource and a guide for building stimulating personal practices and classes. And because it is being generated from this blog, its title is “Yoga Posts: Building a Steady Practice One Week at a Time.”

As of today, I have finished assembling all of the research, experience and words of inspiration I have held near and dear to my heart over the past 25 years of practicing and teaching yoga. I have decided to format the book into a year of challenges based on the eight limbs of yoga – each limb being a “post” that will support a steady yoga practice. Therefore, the book will be comprehensive but digestible, practical but philosophical – a tool for many users.
